Chalkeia
On the 30th day of the lunar month of Pyanepsion, the warp was set for the loom which was used to weave a new peplum for Athena, to be bestowed upon her at the Panathenaia, a festival in her honor held at the start of the Greek year (approximately September 1st). Women called the Workers spent almost a year weaving the elaborate garment in bright colors.

St Fiacre
Patron saint of gardeners, Fiachra was a seventh-century Irishman who built a hermitage in France near Meaux. His vegetable and herb gardens were famous, and he is usually depicted in art holding a shovel and a book.

The annual Grape Vine Festival was held in honor of the Greek Deities Ariadne and Dionysus on this date in ancient Athens. Cretians worshipped Ariadne as a Goddess of the moon, and Dionysus as the son of Semele (who was also a Goddess of the Moon).

Feast of our Lady of the Rose

THE LADY OF THE ROSE REMEMBERS...
The world before long ago,
She sees the path of this new world,
Heedless of lessons past. Reckless.
She Hears the voice of the One
Comforting Strong & Tender. Coming.
That Which was broken made whole.
Twisted. Straightened. New.--

zmoontn.gif (1186 bytes)Birthday of the Monkey God,  Ts'oi T'in Tai Seng Yeh

The 16th day of the eighth lunar month is celebrated in Singapore as the birthday of the Monkey God. Although his shrines are often small and humble, they are popular with the people who come to consult the mediums attached to them.

The Monkey God Festival is celebrated in the true nature of the deity - mischievous, playful and definitely fun to be around.

September 9

St. Ailbe's Day (patron of wolves)

A she-wolf raised him along with her with her cubs, until a hunter found the child in the wolf’s liar and took him away. Years later he was present
at a run when an aged she-wolf ran to him for protection. The bishop recognized his foster-mother and gave her sanctuary and fed her every day thereafter at his own table.

St. Roch's Day

There are lot's of things you can do on what I hope is a beautiful mid September day.  Go for a hike in the mountains or a stroll on the beach and look for interesting rocks.  You could also clean and organize your collection of stones today or visit a rock and gem store in your area and see what you might want to add to your collection.  You might also make up your next years supply of standard elixirs

Annually on this day, ancient Egyptians performed the Ceremony of Lighting the Fire which was a general festival of lights for all the Gods and Goddesses, but especially for Nepthys. Lamps of all kinds were set in front of deity statues. There were also placed before statues of ancestors.

Chrysanthemum Day
One of the five sacred festivals of ancient Japan, celebrated on the ninth day of the night lunar month (or the ninth day of the ninth month). People drink chrysanthemum wine (warm sake sweetened and flavored with chrysanthemum petals), eat chrysanthemum cakes and admire chrysanthemum flowers. Often the chrysanthemum viewing goes on throughout the ninth month.

According to Ha, chrysanthemum cakes are dumplings made from mixing yellow chrysanthemum petals with rice flour. Ha also mentions a beverage made of honey water with mandarin oranges, pears, pomegranates and pine-nuts floating in it. You can also make chrysanthemum wine by placing a petal in a cup of sake. You should also place a cup of sake with a complete flower in it on your altar.

In the green rose tradition the feast of our Lady of Sorrows is dedicated to Ophelia.  It's a very special day when we actually stop and look at our unhappiness and give it over to the Goddess.  This ritual will be very different for every person.  If you sweat the small stuff but hide from the real problems, today is a day to look in the mirror and admit what's really bothering you.  If you're in overwhelm and tottering on the edge like Ophelia; today is a day to give over some of your burdens.

In Alexandria, Egypt, a day-long fast to honor Thoth was held annually on this date. Thoth was called the Lord of Books and Learning. The Elder, and Lord of Holy Words, among other titles. He was self-created, meaning that he came into existence without parents. Thoth was the inventor of hieroglyphs and numbers.. He was ibis headed and wore a lunar disk and crescent (both Moon symbols) on his head; he held the writing reed and palette of a scribe.

Solar Eclipse 29°20 Virgo
11:42 am PDT
Sabian Symbol:
Focused, a man ignores any distractions

When a solar eclipse occurs, the Moon is passing between the Earth and the Sun, creating a New Moon as happens every month, but in this case - the alignment is perfect, the occultation of the Sun by our Moon is complete. In a total Solar Eclipse, the intensity of the New Moon is strong because she is so near to the earth, and also because for those amazing few minutes the power of the Sun is bursting out behind her. The luminaries share space in the same Astrological Sign - and there is great power within the energy of that sign.

The exact degree on which an eclipse occurs becomes a hot-spot of energy - a place where planets passing over and opposing within the next  6 months can trigger further events and realizations related to the eclipse energy.

The emphasis at the time of this full moon  is on clearing, healing, and releasing, in short, applying what we have learned this year. Review the endings and beginnings in your life. Commit to goals that have true priorities in terms of the direction of your soul.  The Pisces-Virgo full moon is sort of a "put your money where your mouth is" moon, because it challenges us to actually take action on those parts of the Good work that we uniquely have been called to do.

Ask yourself what can I do, how can I better serve,  what kind of an example in source light am I, and how will I be judged on the work I have accomplished to date?  Pisces is the gateway and  the Virgo Sun provides a strong push toward moving forward toward true unity with your soul's purpose.

Sun in Libra

When the Sun is in Libra, don't expect decisions to be finalized. Libra Suns mark a time of deliberation, of hemming-and-hawing, of going over and over your options with a fine-toothed comb, weighing the pros and cons. The symbol of Libra is, of course, the Balance. This celestial situation bestows upon us a natural diplomacy and a sense of fairness, and yet we're never really quite sure if we're making the right choice. We'll be in the research stage, so to speak, investigating the possibilities and potentialities. While you're puzzling over a conclusion, you'll also be very persuasively arguing the side you most support. Libra is just as convincing as it is indecisive and tactful and cautious. With this inclination toward harmony, Libra Sun also turns our thoughts to aesthetic beauty and the wonder of interpersonal relationships. This Air Sign desires companionship -- especially romantic love bonds! Anticipate charming suitors and appeasing partners.

The first day of Autumn, which normally occurs on or near this day, the Lessor or Minor Autumn Equinox Sabbat is celebrated by Witches and Wiccans around the world. The Equinox is also known as the Fall Sabbat, and Alban Elfed.  It is popular to amongst many traditions to perform a special rite for the Goddess Persephone's descent into the Underworld as part of their celebration.

Equal dark and equal light.

September 23

Probably the most moving prayer of the Rosh Hashanah Mussaf is Unetanneh Tokef, composed by Rabbi Amnon, a scholar, poet, and leader of the Jewish community of Mainz, in the eleventh century. The text reads as follows:

"The great shofar is sounded... A still small voice is heard...
Even the angels are frightened... the Day of Judgment is here...

Who shall live? And who shall die?
Who shall find rest? And who shall be restless?
Who shall be raised up? And who shall be humbled?
Who shall be rich? And who shall be poor?
But - Atonement, Prayer and Good Deeds deflect the harsh decree!
As for Man, he comes from dust
And to dust he shall return..."

Man is like...
Grass that withers... A flower that fades... A shadow that passes..."

Birth of Taliesin - Taliesin (whose name means Radiant Brow) is the great bard of ancient Britain who drank three drops from the cauldron of Cerridwen and thereby received all wisdom and knowledge. He underwent a series of shamanic transformations into various animal and bird forms before being reborn from the womb of Cerridwen. According to John Matthews, Taliesin “knows, above all, the language of the birds.”

The Chinese Harvest Festival known as the Choosuk, was held on this date annually in China and Taiwan, to honor the Moon Hare and to honor the Moon Goddess Ch'ang-O. Since the Moon has always been associated with the psychic and divination, Chinese magicians used willow wands, wax dolls, water divining, geomancy, yarrow sticks, and magic mirrors for divination during the festival. These mirrors were decorated around the sides with Unicorns, animals representing the four sides of the universe, and other mythical beings. The I Ching (Book of Changes) is still in use today.

Today is  Michaelmas, the feast of the Archangel Michael. This holiday was originally observed in December, but when Christmas was placed on the twenty-fifth of the month, Michaelmas was moved to coincide closely with the Pagan Fall Equinox celebration. According to English folklore, it was on this day that the Devil fell from Heaven, landed on a blackberry bush, and cursed the berries. Therefore, it is unlucky to pick blackberries after Michaelmas. Michaelmas cakes are eaten by the superstitious in Scotland on this day to ward off evil and misfortune in the coming year.

moonfaz.gif (204 bytes)First Quarter Moon at 7°09 Capricorn
4:04 am PDT

The Capricorn Moon will put a necessary hold on our emotional flow. We'll find ourselves wanting to take more control of our feelings and experience. Expect to feel conflicted about any recent changes, but be careful not to overanalyze past choices.  The first quarter  Capricorn moon encourages our moods to focus on big goals and focuses our attention on wide scale achievement and the tenacious skill and persistence required to move forward. Labor and enjoyment leads many to go to great lengths to create the perfect environment for a last tango with the summer sun. Some may seem quite serious and demanding at this time. Capricorn Moon moods are often challenging for those who do not have the physical realities of life in order. A simple attempt at leisurely enjoyment may turn out to be a laborious task if you don't know what you're doing. Plan your final dance with summer wisely.  This is a good time to plan and gear up to a final launch toward enjoying the summer's late bounty.

On this date in ancient Greece, the Festival of Themis celebrating the Goddess as ruler of Delphi was held annually on this date. Themis is a very ancient Goddess of justice. Oaths were taken in her name while wearing her sacred purple mantle. She was the Goddess of the collective unconsciousness, social order, divine spiritual law, peace, settlement of disagreements, justice, social gatherings, wisdom, prophecy, order, childbirth, courts, and judges. Carrying a pair of scales, she was another form of the Earth Mother, personifying law and order. Themis protected the innocent and punished the guilty.
