Front Hall

"The earthen floor just inside the threshold of old Irish cottages …was known as the 'welcome of the door'. Upon entering, a visitor would stand there and say a blessing for the household. This was holy ground…An in-between place, it was sacred because it marked the boundary between the life of the human family within and the wide world without."

The center is the central axis, the roof tree. If you don't have a central chimney, there is probably a staircase or a supporting wall somewhere near the middle of the house. This is your "bilé", the roof tree which holds the whole house together and enables you to go up and down freely as our "world tree" enables us to pass between worlds freely. As such, you might want to decorate that wall with a Celtic knotwork tree-of-life picture or carving or a quilt of that name. You can put an incense (or better, sweet oil) burner on a shelf or side table near it. When you come down in the morning, go up to bed at night, or return from a trip, be aware of the constant movement between natural, human and spiritual worlds. Let the simple act of walking up and down stairs, or of touching the side of your chimney, become a meditative reconnection with all the levels at which we exist. No, you probably can't do it every time you go up and down stairs; there are kids to yell at and missing tie-tacks to find while running madly about. But that once or twice a day will help you to remember who you are.

The following is the excerpt of a Feng Shui reading I got

Hallway

If you want a career that involves harmony, creativity, and elegance, decorate your hallway accordingly. A dim, narrow corridor can be dramatically transformed with an uplight or elegant torchiere. Be mindful of the first thing you see when entering your hallway. Is it a blank wall? Hang a beautiful picture with a depth view on it. Do you see another door? Suspend a lovely chandelier or paper lantern overhead, just low enough to catch your eye. Is there a narrow staircase here? Place a tall plant in an elegant brass bowl to the right of the bottom step. If you have a wide, generous foyer, put a highly polished console table there, and top it with a crystal vase filled with fresh flowers. The more attractive your front hallway is, the more appealing your job offers will be.

Exterior Entrance

Your exterior entrance should convey an image of peace, harmony, and understanding. A curved path, circular bird bath, and climbing plants are all good cures for a stagnant work situation.

Fragrant rose bushes can attract the job opportunities you want, but be sure to keep them well-pruned.

I have a silk rose tree on the front porch -- It looks incredibly real and it obviously doesn't need pruning.

Make sure that your doorbell or door knocker is clearly visible to guests, and that these summoning devices are in good working order.

If you have room on your porch to comfortably accommodate a wooden bench for two, this would be a strong boost to your career prospects.

2/13/04 We've actively talked about this.  Maybe if we get the truck I'll see if there is something I can find that we like

2005 We moved the small metal table and chairs out onto the porch.  Not sure it's completely the right answer but it's a step in the right direction

Paint your front door a pastel color if you long for a promotion. If such colors are too feminine for you, you can always compromise by affixing an oval name plate on your front door; make sure your name is engraved in elegant script.

This advice is harder to follow since John and I don't share a last name.  I have just hung up a welcome sign that is oval shaped.
