Perineum

This chakra is a the very root of who we have chosen to be in this life.  It is here that we have picked one of the four primary archetypes we could chose, Mother, Amazon, Hetaera, or Mediatrix for a woman and Sage, Father, Puer, or Warrior for a man.  It is also here where we can lose our balance and embrace the shadow side of these same archetypes.  Additionally it is here that we can be damaged by the shadow choices of our parents, and our lovers.

Understanding this chakra has been a very interesting adventure.  Please know that nothing I write here may be true for you.  It's been a long journey to find some level of understanding that works for me and your journey may be very different.  The first chakra on the kundalini line is often listed as pertaining to survival.  That generally means physical survival.  The Perineum is the root of our emotional and spiritual survival.  Relationships at this level can affect the kundalini BUT you can't heal a perineum problem by treating the root chakra.

There are certain key things to understand about this Chakra.  It's nature is fiery and it is also tied directly to the warrior image we all our carry in our genes.  The integration of the Perineum Chakra with the Root Chakra can cause significant issues if something is out of balance.

This Chakra represents our Tribe - our family, our ethnic group, school, church, and later in life often those on the job. The tribal influence is one of group consciousness. The opinions, values and truth of the group are our opinions, values and truth. Our reality is determined by the tribe. If we have an experience that is outside the understanding of the tribe, or if that experience runs contrary to the opinion of the tribe, they will invalidate that experience to us. They will tell us it didn't happen. If we are not very strong within ourselves, we will lose that experience. Our own evolution can only change at the speed of the tribe.

Tribal influence is not all negative. It is where we learn that we are "part of." Humans are social beings and we need others. We learn about supporting others, that there are goals that extend beyond ourselves, and for the benefit of others. We learn of loyalty and trust. We learn that others will care for us and that we can care for others. From our tribal roots we get a sense of safety. The spiritual lesson of the first chakra, is that all is one. These are the emotional strengths of this chakra.

The physical dysfunctions that can arise from this area are depression, immune system disorders, rectal tumors and cancers, varicose veins and chronic, lower back pain.

The Perineal Chakra

(Hui Yin )

This chakra - called in Taoism Hui Yin - is located between the genitals and the anus; the part of the body called the perineum.

When the Perineum is strong, the organs remain firm and healthy; when it is weak the organs lose cohesiveness and Chi energy drains away.  Because this Centre is the gate through which Ch'i energy from the other organs can be either retained or lost, it is called the "Gate of Life and Death."

This center constitutes the lowest of the Yin or descending energy chakras, and is the lower meeting point of the Governor or Yang, and the Conception or Yin nadis or channels.  It is connected to the element Earth and hence corresponds to the physical plane of existence, and is (through the feet) the main link with the Earth Chi energy.

The Perineum center is connected by four primary nadis or energy channels:

The first runs along the center of the body to the Crown Chakra.  Through this central nadi flows the Heaven Ch'i energy (Universal Yang) from the crown chakra.

The second connects to the soles of the feet and allows the absorption of Earth Chi energy (Universal Yin).  This Earth Ch'i energy plays a central role in shamanism and neo-paganism; it is the energy of Gaia, Mother Earth.  (e.g. the "Rainbow Serpent" of Australian Aboriginal mythology). When you walk barefoot on the ground and you get a good feeling from that, that is the Earth or Yin energy.

The third - the Yin or Conception channel - connects to and receives chi from the navel and genital centers.

And the fourth - the Yang or Governor channel - connects to the rear Coccygeal and Sacral Centers and receives from them universal nature energy, as well as transmitting Chi from the navel and genital centers during the Microcosmic orbit.

When the Perineal Chakra is open and functioning well, one feels grounded and full of physical energy; if it is weak or blocked, one has difficulty relating to earthy things, and may feel emotionally insecure.

Associated Psychological states:

Balanced and Open: The essence power that we acquire when our perineum chakra is activated and balanced is absolute stillness. When we can truly be still, we are aware of our own presence, we can instinctually feel our own body and our physical surroundings, we can completely relax and rest, we feel at home in our body, on Earth, wherever we are.

Overactive: There appear to be two ways an overactive perineum chakra can manifest the first is being fixated at the anal level, with a crude or childish sense of humor (bathroom humor carried to the extreme) or in a need to express rage through humiliation and degrading behavior.

Blocked or Malfunctioning: Difficulty relating to earthy things.  Obsessive-compulsive behavior; obsessive tidiness, a fear of germs.
