Journey to the Land of Erc - Knight of the Order of Rainbow

Wednesday Jan 17, 2007

"Earraigh, I need to speak with you now!" I said as I stormed into his office.  "You hornswaggled me, and I want to know why."

"Hornswaggled?  Dear lady, I wouldn't dream of it.  I admit that I let you believe whatever you wanted to believe last year, but I never lied and I certainly didn't cheat you.  Besides, you took the key, you donned the purple.  You certainly knew you were going to be chosen to be of service somewhere."

"Last year I wasn't even sure if I had actually taken the key, and I know that I never really donned the purple.   In fact I'm still hoping to find out that I've jumped through enough hoops to get admitted to the club -- at least I think I am.  But that's not the point -- you could have told me that I was agreeing to enter my master's trials if I took the shield last year."

"Actually, you have it wrong.  You took the key, you said that you would serve Athena and the land and we did what we always do -- we sent you out to be of service.  In case you missed the part of being of service -- taking the purple means you take the assignments you are given whether they're hard or they're easy."

"And the fact that I had to be a warrior,  I said that I'd given that up.  No more Ms. Amazon."

Earriagh simply leaned back in his chair and smiled.  "And zebras change their stripes and leopards their spots.  But now that you're done -- are you unhappy that you have-- what is the expression in your reality?  Been there, done that, got the t-shirt?

"Did I really make it?  Why does Erc give a master's ranking for leadership.  Isn't it just as important in all the other lands?  Should it not be assumed as one of my skills from Duhb?"

When I looked at the expression of incredulity on Earriagh's face I knew that I'd gotten it quite wrong.  "Ok, so leadership is your department, and yes I passed the test.  It was scary, and I certainly don't want to be the one leading the charge again.  Of course I might do better next time" I said with a smile as I finally relaxed into my chair.

We were both silent for a moment and then I asked "So what is this Order of the Rainbow?  I admit that I have absolutely no idea.  Somehow the thought of a secret society here in the other world seems rather unnecessary."

"It's actually no more secret than being a Draiover.  Erc has a number of orders just like Dubh."

"I take it this is something else where there really wasn't any choice to make?  Will someone actually tell me about what it means to be a Turca Ridire?

"I'm sure Camilla will be happy to.  She is actually a member herself, but I think that is a subject for another day."
