The West has always represented the direction of the other world.  As with most things the west wind can be experienced in stages.  It is often the wind that draws those who wish to explore and wander and for some they never move beyond that stage.  For others it becomes a world they can navigate in and as their expertise and experience increases they find that they can be of help to others by retrieving things that have gotten lost or by mediating where necessary.  In it's most conventional form this is called soul retrieval
